Federal Government to Launch Online Digital Literacy Portal
5.12.11 | The U.S. government is expected to launch a new website on Friday to increase the public’s digital literacy skills and help Americans better navigate the internet-based economy.
DigitalLiteracy.gov will be an interactive space for educators, workforce development practitioners and the public to access the latest resources for learning computer skills and digital literacy.

The interagency effort focuses on reaching vulnerable populations who otherwise might not have access to such resources and on providing basic information on getting started with online skills and internet safety.
Developers say the site will aggregate quality work already going on in the field and will guide users to content in specific topic areas.
The site will serve as a hub for practitioners from libraries, schools, community centers, community colleges and workforce training centers to share quality resources and work toward the development of best practices and case studies.
Users will be able to share and rate digital literacy content and practices. The portal will also feature research and news, and members can contribute their own work.
DigitalLiteracy.gov is spearheaded by the Department of Commerce, in partnership with the U.S. Department of Education, the Institute of Museum and Library Services and seven other federal agencies.
