Game Changers: John Palfrey on Parenting in the Digital Age

The co-author of Born Digital talks about the challenges of parenting in the rapidly evolving digital age.
This week’s featured podcast is part of Edutopia’s online library of the Digital Generation Project.
As parents, we have to figure out how we want to raise our children in a world where kids are interacting with each other in new digital spaces. Palfrey says some of the same commonsense parenting adages should still apply: set limits and adjust over time. What’s right for a six-year-old is not right for an eleven-year-old or a sixteen-year-old. Palfrey recommends building a connection around digital media with your children early on – this is something parents and kids can talk about and do together. Parents who say ‘do it on your own’ are missing an important opportunity for engagement with their kids.

Edutopia’s The Digital Generation Project was produced with support from the MacArthur Foundation. Edutopia is published by The George Lucas Educational Foundation.
