Steven Gerber: Internet Meets the International Criminal Court
3.18.08 | In the 10th anniversary year of the treaty establishing the International Criminal Court, the ICC is poised to begin its first three trials. At least 10 people have been indicted, but not all have been arrested. At least five other international or hybrid criminal tribunals are in operation. Clearly, we are entering a new era of international justice. Just as the internet and virtual worlds have the possibility of bringing individuals closer regardless of national borders, more and more individuals and governments understand that there are some crimes (genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes) that transcend national borders and must be addressed by the international community when national judicial systems are incapable of unwilling to do it themselves. Here at the MacArthur Foundation, we are interested in bringing together the emerging system of international justice with the global internet and virtual world community. So, we are very excited that on the occasion of our first ever International Justice Award, Global Kids will be launching the International Justice Center in Second Life and we look forward to greater public awareness and involvement in this emerging justice system.
