Katie Salen: The International Journal of Learning and Media (IJLM)

Katie Salen announces the birth of a new journal from MIT press, co-edited by Salen, David Buckingham, and Tara McPherson.
This week marks a milestone worthy of note: in addition to the launch of the MacArthur Foundation Series on Digital Media and Learning, MIT Press will announce the birth of a new journal intended to build on the research and ideas outlined in the series’ first six volumes. Co-edited by David Buckingham, Tara McPherson, and myself, The International Journal of Learning and Media (IJLM) provides a forum for scholars, researchers and practitioners to examine the changing relationships between learning and media across a wide range of forms and settings. International and intercultural in scope we see IJLM as a necessary tool to deepen the roots of exchange between a wide variety of academic disciplines focused on the effects and potentials of learning and media, including the creation of a much needed conduit linking practitioners, researchers, participants, and policy-makers.
In defining a mission statement for IJLM David, Tara and I felt it was incredibly important to emphasize many of the contexts and conditions that affect our understanding of the learning and media landscape. Our focus is particularly, but by no means exclusively, on young people and we understand learning to include informal and everyday contexts as well as institutions such as schools. We are especially interested in the broader social and cultural dimensions of these issues; and in new and emerging media technologies, forms and practices.
David, Tara, and I made a deliberate decision to exclude the term “digital” from the title of IJLM, as we believe it is only a matter of time before the ubiquity of the word renders it obsolete. In addition, if we take into account the myriad ways that young and old alike experience the intersection between media and learning, “digitalness” is just one part of the equation.
We look forward to helping shape, refine, and even challenge a dialogue starting to take shape around learning and media and invite participation in this effort from all with an eye to the future. Hi there,
As a social practioner in information education, I’ve found your series on digital media and learning + your IJLM very interesting. French translation is slow but I keep going.
In my region, we’ve launched a study on young people information and learning practices (digital media included).
Conclusions will come soon.
