Last Day to Apply for Free Video and Music Production Training in Bay Area

5.9.11 | Are you an educator or community service provider in the Bay area? Wondering how you can incorporate using digital video or music production programming in your work with high-school aged youth? The Bay Area Video Coalition is offering a free week-long training workshop—but you’ll need to hurry: Today is the last day to apply.

The training, scheduled for June 27 - July 1, will cover the basics of computer-based video and music production using industry-standard software. It’s open to teachers, after-school programming providers, and staff from community-based organizations who are interested in running digital media programming.

Music or audio production experience is not required. As BVAC says, “We will teach you what you need to get started.” The workshop takes place at BVAC’s main office in San Francisco.

Plus: Here’s a resource you can take advantage of no matter where you live. Student media expert Leslie Rule is now blogging for PBS Teachers Blog on best practices for engaging students in the creation of original media projects. From Rule’s inaugural post:

Project VoiceScape is a partnership between Adobe Youth Voices (AYV), the Adobe Foundation’s global signature philanthropy program, the PBS Foundation, and POV. In addition, KQED’s Digital Media Center is providing hands-on training to stations and community partners. This blog works as a collaborative forum to engage PBS stations, community partners, and educators interested in exploring how youth-created media can and should be integrated into the sphere of public media production, broadcast, and exhibition…by doing!

There are only a couple of posts so far but we look forward to reading more. Rule recently covered the Adobe Youth Voices (AYV) site, which offers open curricula and resources for educators, including strategies for exhibition and distribution of student work. Registration is required to gain access to the materials, and users receive an email once a quarter with information about newly added content.
