Week’s Theme: Posts by Forum Panelists (re: Virtual Worlds and Learning)
11.13.07 | We are excited about our third public forum, to be held at the University of Southern California this Wednesday (for more, view the details). Last February, In Chicago we talked about games and learning; In April, Duke University hosted a wonderful conversation on the future of institutions. Next up, Anastasia Goodstein, Doug Thomas, Yasmin Kafai and Barry Joseph will discuss the “wonders and worries” of virtual worlds for young people. Please look for Doug and Barry’s posts, where they provide highlights of their thoughts. Following the event, please look for follow-up thoughts from Jim Steyer of Common Sense Media, Yasmin and Anastasia. This ideas presented in this panel are important to discuss, as it’s clear to me that tweens today are going to be more digitally connected than even today’s teen-agers. Yet, I found many aspects of the panelists positions more positive or optimistic than perhaps is necessary. Maybe a little more critiquing would be a good idea.
I’ve been watching my son for nearly six months on Club Penguin and Webkinz and been watching him on the computer since he could move his fingers. I think kids being on virtual reality worlds is far more complicated and that the implications are more serious and problematic. I pointed out this a bit on my blog: hightechparent.blogspot.com
