On Monday November 17, the MacArthur Foundation, the USC Network Culture Project and Global Kids will sponsor “Real World Impacts from the Virtual World” in Second Life.
The event, which will feature panels and breakout sessions about efforts to promote the public good in virtual worlds, will offer a sneak preview of the MacArthur Foundation’s island in Second Life. The event is to be held on November 17, 2008 from 1-5pm PST.
Join us to learn about how groups use virtual spaces like Second Life to build real opportunities such as preserving native peoples’ cultures, creating accessible spaces for people with disabilities, helping obese people make healthy life choices and teaching underprivileged youth about paleontology and science.
This interactive series of events will take place on Foundations Sim and the neighboring archipelago that includes the Network Culture Project, Justice Commons and Aloft Nonprofit Commons.
NOVEMBER 17 SCHEDULE:
1:00PM PST: Real World Impact from the Public Good Community Challenge: Challenge awardees share their lessons learned. Hosted by USC Network Culture Project
2:00PM PST: Tours of the Foundations Sim will be led by avatars from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation at Foundations Sim.
Panel and discussion on Alliance Building in Virtual Worlds hosted by Nonprofit Commons.
3:00PM PST: Panel Discussion on Using Virtual Worlds for Learning, hosted by RezEd.org at Justice Commons.
4:00PM PST: “Birds-of-a-feather” Breakout Sessions and Social Mixer hosted by Global Kids at Justice Commons.
In the meantime, Rik Panganiban of Global Kids and Doug Thomas of the USC Network Culture Project reflect on how their respective organizations have sought to promote the public good by working in virtual worlds. Their posts are here and here.
