What Would Your Students Include in the State of the Union?
1.27.10 | Wondering how to turn the State of the Union into an engaging assignment? Vanessa Vartabedian, the community manager at the New Media Literacies Community Site, a research initiative based within USC’s Annenberg School for Communication, posted a great suggestion today: Join in writing a collaborative State of the Union.

Perhaps (just perhaps) you haven’t prepared your lesson for class today? Or you need a truly engaging and relevant homework assignment? Or you need some inspiration yourself. Well here’s something both you and your students can do today!
The Brian Lehrer Show (WYNC) is inviting listeners to write a collaborative State of the Union speech for President Obama with MixedInk. This is tight timing (it’s tonight!), but would be great a homework or after-school activity for them to practice participation, collaboration and remixing!
It is an interesting challenge for students to capture the historical tome and message that this particular speech needs to achieve, as well as create an understanding of both the accomplishments and challenges of the past year. (Heck! That would be an interesting challenge for me!)
...And Brian will be discussing the final product on the radio!
(Even if you don’t have time today, check out MixedInc.com anytime to practice these skills with your students)
Let us know in the comments if your students take part. Good luck!
