“They Made it Their Own:” Classroom Remix Projects From Chicago Middle School Students
7.7.10 | Students at Carter G. Woodson Middle School in Chicago work together on projects that use digital media and remixing. In this example, students were asked to use the documentary “The Black List” as a jumping-off point to make their own documentary about what it means to be a black teenager in Chicago today.
Students are asked to take a critical look at source material and determine how to apply it to make an argument or use as evidence to support a larger point. Students can choose from music, video, text or software, depending on their selection and the assignment. Students use the projects to make political statements, to rally the public about community issues, and as tributes to those who inspire them.
