Connie Yowell: Media Literacy as week’s Spotlight, plus some Great Launch Coverage

After a launch recap, this week’s featured guests are introduced, including Nichole Pinkard, Henry Jenkins and Eric Zimmerman—all gathered under the banner of media literacy.

Hello everyone. I’m Connie Yowell, Director of Education at the MacArthur Foundation.  I’m part of the group at MacArthur working on grantmaking in Digital Media and Learning

QUICK LAUNCH SUMMARY
I’ve been following the blogosphere discussion of our October 19th launch in New York City, which has included our President’s first-ever post, the event podcast, danah boyd’s launch summary, the Second Life chat log from our simucast—just to name a few.  Its also been wonderful to see all the posts and comments of the last week on Spotlight!  The most recent from Mimi, Jim, Cathy, Barry and Lucky’s posts (not to mention external blog coverage like here, here, and here) demonstrated quite a range of important topics for further discussion and served to remind me again, of the need to share ideas and issues about young people and digital media.

INTRODUCING THIS WEEK’S SPOTLIGHT: MEDIA LITERACY
For the next few weeks, we will focus the Spotlight on specific topics.  This week we’re shining the Spotlight on media literacy.  Those with whom we are working will share ideas each day to help get the conversation started.  Henry Jenkins here, Nichole Pinkard here and Eric Zimmerman here are all engaged in very different and equally exciting projects. They’ve each promised us posts for this week—so look for them and please share your thoughts and reactions.

I also recommend taking a look at Henry Jenkin’s white paper on Participatory Culture.  It provides a new framework for thinking about digital media in the 21st Century.

Stay tuned; we’ve asked our guests to post again later this week…
