Event Recap: Philanthropy in Virtual Worlds—photos, podcasts and more
On June 22, MacArthur Foundation President Jonathan Fanton and Linden Lab CEO Philip Rosedale (a.k.a. Philip Linden) had an historic conversation about how virtual worlds could revolutionize philanthropy. At the event, Fanton also announced that the foundation would begin a year-long investigation into virtual worlds, including making some in-world grants through the USC Annenberg Center on Public Diplomacy.

OUTCOMES: More than 200 avatars congregated in an auditorium designed specifically for the event. 25% of the additional 383 audio channel listeners were from outside the US. News coverage included the NYTimes (philanthropy reporter), Future Tense (5-min radio blurb) Chronicle of Philanthropy, Chronicle of Higher Education, and the USC press release.

The event began with a video from Jonathan Fanton (top right in the image below), while avatars took their seats...

Next, the avatars of Rosedale and Fanton appeared on stage, and over the audio channel their conversation began. Soon they opened the floor to questions from the audience, which were sent by text message and then read on the voice channel by Connie Yowell...
Finally, the group adjourned for a reception where MacArthur staff answered questions about philanthropy and programming areas from conservation to housing...
