This Week’s Events in Virtual Worlds: Justice Center, ICC Prosecutor Moreno-Ocampo, Kofi Annan

This Wednesday and Thursday the public is invited to a suite of events held in conjunction with the launch of the International Justice Center in Second Life.  The Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) will appear in avatar form, there will be an art show gala, plus simulcasts of a top-tier panel on international justice and a keynote by Kofi Annan as he receives the first MacArthur Award for International Justice.

To continue MacArthur’s year-long exploration into the role of philanthropy in virtual worlds (see the original announcement), this week we focus on international justice and the International Criminal Court (ICC).  All the events below were conceptualized and developed by Global Kids and the Institute for Network Culture at USC.  (For more on digital intersections with the court, see the post from earlier today on The Internet Meets the ICC by MacArthur Program Officer Steven Gerber.)

The events will coincide with the opening of a new facility in Second Life known as the International Justice Center—an online learning center that will provide resources for people to learn about the International Criminal Court, connect with ICC officials and advocates, and take action in support of human rights and international justice.  For more, read an announcement of the Center by Rik Panganiban on this blog.

WEDNESDAY (March 19, 5pm PST in Second Life): The Visions of Global Justice gala will share new art works on themes of justice as part of a preview of the new International Justice Center which opens this week in Second Life.  Join a dozen talented artists from the virtual world presenting their visions of justice.

THURSDAY (March 20) will feature three events:
(1) 3:00-4:00pm PST: In-world remarks and Q&A with prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo of the International Criminal Court
(2) 4:30-6:00pm PST: Simulcast of a panel discussion by major human rights officials on the topic of “The Emerging International Justice System”, also simulcast into Whyville and There.com and broadcast live to the web by SLCN.TV
(3) 9:00-9:40pm PST: Simulcast of the award ceremony and keynote address by Mr. Kofi Annan, former United Nations Secretary General, as part of his Award.

To access any of these events, visit the Center’s website (http://justicecenter.net/), or read more about them via press releases on the Art Gala (USC) and the Center and Thursday events (Global Kids).
