New Grants, Reflections on Spotlight’s Launch

MacArthur’s President considers how far Spotlight has come and announces support for three new projects.

It has been two months since we launched the digital media and learning initiative and I welcomed you to this Spotlight blog. The blog is a bit of an experiment - bringing a number of voices together to discuss shared interests relating to digital media and learning - and we were not certain how it would evolve.  It has been fascinating to watch, and we could not have predicted a better outcome.

Each week we featured a different topic related to the MacArthur Series on Digital Media and Learning, in which researchers, academics, practitioners and others explore core issues facing young people in the digital world. Authors of the series shared their thoughts on everything from race and identity in the digital era to the use of games for learning. I am making the blog a part of my regular reading and, in the new year I look forward to continuing this rich discussion of the emerging field of digital media and learning.

I am pleased to announce support for three new projects, each exploring the potential of the virtual world for learning. A grant to Indiana University will support the building of Quest Atlantis, an online immersive environment where young people can explore and develop media literacy skills and capacities. A grant to Duke University and the Humanities, Arts, Sciences, and Technology Advanced Collaboratory (HASTAC) will provide resources for a study of the future of institutions in the digital age and, finally, a grant to New York Law School will contribute to the fourth annual State of Play conference on the future of cyberspace. This has been a wonderful resource--thank you for making it available.  I have been in contact with several other scholars about their work with the Digital Learning and Media initiative.  I think the process of grant-making is a bit closed at the moment, but perhaps that will change in the near future.  Keep up the great work.
