Event Recap: Civil Liberties and Virtual Worlds—photos, podcasts and more

On January 28, the MacArthur Foundation co-hosted its second event in a virtual world.  The topic was ‘civil liberties and virtual worlds,’ featuring Jack Balkin of Yale Law School and Robin Harper of Linden Lab in conversation with Jonathan Fanton, President of the Foundation.  USC and Global Kids co-hosted the event.

Thanks go out to Jack Balkin, professor of Constitutional Law and the First Amendment at Yale Law School and Robin Harper, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Business Development from Linden Lab for their participation. Thanks also to the Second Life community for their thoughtful and engaged questions and to Barry Joseph and Rik Panganiban from Global Kids and Doug Thomas from the Institute for Networked Culture for their participation and leadership.

Back in June, President Jonthan Fanton launched MacArthur’s examination of philanthropy in virtual worlds when he first hosted Linden Lab CEO Philip Rosedale.  Our civil liberties event continues that examination, and we look forward to upcoming events which will shed additional light.

    TOP STATS:
  • More than 200 avatars attended the event from the adult and teen grids from approximately sixteen countries. Over 100 additional people listened to the event live on the web.
