Description of Current Work:
Research interests focus on examining the roles of structure and culture in the realm of the marginalized experiences of underserved communities. This in-depth interview-based research program with marginalized communities is complemented by population-level studies that examine the role of health orientation in the context of the relationship between social structures and the use of health communication channels. Applications based upon this research are centered on the development of communication strategies for transforming structures, developing community capacities, and centralizing the voices of community participants in social change programs addressing the structural impediments to health. Dr. Dutta’s research on e-health builds upon this central theme to explore the functions served by health communication technologies, the relationship between technology inaccess and health disparities, and the roles of communication technologies in addressing structural inequities in healthcare. Research in these areas has resulted in over 50 journal articles and over 80 conference papers presented at national and international conferences. For his contribution to health communication scholarship, Professor Dutta was recognized as the 2006 Lewis Donohew Outstanding Health Communication Scholar at the Kentucky Conference in Health Communication.
