Description of Current Work:
The digital era has shifted the terrain of race, civil rights and hate speech. Extremist white supremacist literature such as pamphlets, newsletters, and newspapers, were, prior to about 1993, part of an underground press and relatively difficult to obtain. Since that time these groups, have become part of a revolution in publishing that is transforming the way social movement organizations function in society. Today, white supremacist discourse that was, just a few years ago, part of a clandestine underground is now readily available from any computer wired with internet access. However, the hype in the mainstream press about the kinds of danger posed by these groups online may have misstated the danger. Uniquely Internet-based mechanisms of undermining civil rights, such as cloaked sites, have emerged alongside overt racist hate speech. At stake in this shifting digital terrain is how we make and evaluate knowledge claims, as well as our vision for social justice.
